Senior Backend Engineer - TypeScript Rust and Go

We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to architect, build, and own the server-side systems that power our platform, Axova — an all-in-one Ethiopian unified commerce platform bringing POS, marketplace, delivery, payments, and AI together for merchants. You'll build the APIs, databases, integrations, and core business logic behind it.

Our stack is built primarily on TypeScript, Rust, and Go, so strong hands-on experience in one or more of these is essential. Because Axova is a commerce platform at its core, familiarity with how e-commerce systems work — orders, inventory, carts, checkout, payments, fulfillment — will make you effective from day one.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, build, and maintain backend services and business logic in TypeScript, Rust, and/or Go

- Build and maintain REST, GraphQL, and gRPC APIs consumed by web, mobile, internal tools, and other services

- Build core commerce logic: orders, inventory, pricing, carts, checkout, and payment flows

- Integrate third-party APIs and external services

- Design and manage database schemas, ensuring data integrity and performance at scale

- Implement authentication, authorization, and permission systems

- Build background job/queue infrastructure (scheduled tasks, retries, async processing)

- Write clean, tested, well-documented, idiomatic code and participate in code review via GitHub

- Maintain clean Git history and follow branching/PR workflows (feature branches, code review, CI checks before merge)

- Optimize performance-critical services, choosing the right language for the job (Rust/Go for high-throughput or latency-sensitive paths, TypeScript for application/API layers)

- Monitor performance, debug production issues, and optimize for reliability and scale

- Collaborate with frontend engineers and the product team to ship features end-to-end

Required Skills & Experience

- 4+ years of backend experience, with a track record of owning production systems end-to-end

- Expert-level proficiency in at least one of: TypeScript (Node.js — Express/NestJS/Fastify), Rust (Actix/Axum/Tokio), or Go (Gin/Echo/net-http) — a second is a strong plus

- Experience designing and shipping REST, GraphQL, and/or gRPC APIs in production

- Familiarity with e-commerce systems (Shopify, WooCommerce, or custom commerce backends) — you understand orders, inventory, checkout, and payment lifecycles

- Fast, high-output developer — uses AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) daily to ship quickly with near-perfect quality

- Solid relational database skills (PostgreSQL/MySQL); Redis a plus

- Comfortable with concurrency/async patterns in your primary language (goroutines, async/await, or Rust's async runtime)

- Strong Git/GitHub proficiency (branches, pull requests, code review, GitHub Actions/CI)

- Working experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure)

- Familiarity with message queues/job schedulers (BullMQ, NATS, RabbitMQ, Kafka)

- Understanding of authentication/authorization patterns (OAuth, JWT, role-based access control)

- Experience with containerization (Docker) and CI/CD pipelines

- Must have your own high-end laptop that runs a modern development environment smoothly (16GB+ RAM, SSD, recent CPU — Apple Silicon or equivalent)

Nice to Have

- Production experience across more than one of TypeScript/Rust/Go

- Protobuf with gRPC for service-to-service communication

- Payment API integrations (Chapa, Telebirr, Stripe)

- Webhook-based third-party integrations

- Multi-tenant SaaS architecture; Kubernetes

- Observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, Sentry)

- Unit/integration testing and test-driven workflows
