What the work actually involves

Web applications

Building and maintaining Laravel applications supporting agent management, back-oﬃce banking operations, customer support tooling and partner institution consoles.
Implementing role-based access control, maker-checker approval flows and audit logging as regulatory requirements.
Building operational reporting and reconciliation views used by institution staﬀ daily .
Integrating with our backend services over REST .

USSD channel

Owning menu design, session handling and telecom gateway integration.
Designing session state management that survives timeouts, dropped sessions and network interruption without ever stranding a customer mid-transfer or leaving a transaction in an unknown state.
Building within hard constraints: strict character limits per screen, no formatting, no back button, and users navigating in what may be their second language.
Implementing multilingual menu trees across English, Amharic, Afaan Oromo and Somali — a genuine design problem when a translated option must still fit the screen.
Handling transaction flows including balance enquiry, transfers and PIN management, with the security discipline that implies.
Testing across real handsets and networks, not only emulators.

Technical skills required

Web engineering

Strong PHP and Laravel in production — MVC, Eloquent, migrations, queues, jobs, middleware and the request lifecycle.
REST API design and integration.
Session and state management in stateless environments.
Web security: authentication, authorization, input validation, injection and CSRF prevention, secure secret handling.

Data layer

Strong query writing against large datasets, working with the database directly .
Writing and debugging stored procedures.
Query optimisation and indexing for reporting and reconciliation views over large datasets.
Transaction handling and data integrity .
