- English Reading and Comprehension Tutors

Two Part-Time Tutor Positions

We are seeking two capable and responsible college students to provide English reading and comprehension tutoring to two children for the rest of the summer, starting from Monday, August 10, 2026, to Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

Available Positions

- Position 1: English Tutor for a 10-Year-Old Girl, a female college student is preferred for this position.

- Position 2: English Tutor for a 14-Year-Old Boy, a male college student is preferred for this position.

Schedule

- Three sessions per week

- Session time: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

- Each session will consist of:

1. 50 minutes of tutoring

2. A 10-minute break

3. An additional 50 minutes of tutoring

- The specific tutoring days will be agreed upon with the selected tutors.

Main Responsibilities

Each tutor will be responsible for selecting and teaching an age-appropriate English-language book for the child assigned to them.

The selected book must:

- Reflect Christian teachings or important virtues such as hard work, dedication, patience, discipline and perseverance.

- Contain positive and constructive themes that will be considered interesting for the child's age.

- Be appropriate for the child’s age.

- Use vocabulary and content suitable for the child.

- Be a book that the tutor has previously read and remembers well.

- Be of a suitable length to complete, or substantially cover, during the tutoring period.

- Be available in local market so that two separate copies can be procured for the tutor and the child.

During each session, the tutor will:

- Ask the child to read passages from the selected book aloud.

- Follow the reading using a separate copy of the book.

- Correct pronunciation, word recognition and other reading errors.

- Help the child improve reading fluency, expression and confidence.

- Regularly ask the child to explain the meaning of passages in their own words.

- Explain difficult words, ideas or passages clearly and concisely.

- Ask comprehension questions to assess the child’s understanding.

- Give appropriate assignments to be completed before the next day's session.

Assignments may include:

- Learning and using new vocabulary.

- Writing short summaries or brief essays based on the reading.

- Answering comprehension questions.

- Explaining the main message or lesson of a passage.

Applicant Requirements

Applicants must:

- Be current college students who did not complete their freshman year during the current year, so second year and above students.

- Be of age from 19 to 23.

- Be studying a STEM-related field.

- Be fluent in spoken and written English.

- Have clear pronunciation and strong reading comprehension skills.

- Be able to explain ideas clearly, patiently and in an age-appropriate manner.

- Be punctual, dependable, respectful and comfortable working with children.

- Be available throughout the full tutoring period.

Applicants who have English-language proficiency certificates are encouraged to provide them. Relevant certificates may include IELTS, TOEFL or certificates issued by recognized English-language institutions.

Previous English tutoring or teaching experience is preferred but not mandatory.

- Confirmation that they are available for the entire tutoring period.

- They must be currently living in Addis Ababa, around Mexico, Merkato or Lideta.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a virtual interview during which their English fluency, pronunciation and communication skills will be assessed.

-Compensation: 300 ETB per hour.
