Job Title: Senior Accountant
Department: Finance
Reports To: Head of Finance (Trading)
Location: Adds Ababa

Position Summary
We are seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our finance team. This role is pivotal in supporting the Trading Head of Finance by managing the financial health of our trading and merchandising operations. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between traditional accounting and the fast-paced world of trading, ensuring financial accuracy, inventory control, and strategic cost management.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Analysis (Trading Focus)

Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements specifically related to trading P&L, margins, and revenue streams.
Support the Head of Finance in forecasting trading volumes, revenue targets, and cash flow requirements.
Provide variance analysis reports, explaining deviations between actual performance and budget/forecast.

Inventory & Cost Management (Merchandising)

Oversee the accounting for inventory, including cost of goods sold (COGS), inventory valuation, and reconciliation of physical counts with general ledger.
Analyze product profitability and provide insights on pricing strategies to the merchandising team.
Monitor and report on purchase price variances, freight costs, and supplier rebates.

General Ledger & Reconciliation

Manage the month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring all journal entries, accruals, and prepayments are accurately recorded.
Reconcile key balance sheet accounts, including bank accounts, inter-company transactions, and trading clearing accounts.
Ensure compliance with accounting standards (e.g., IFRS or GAAP) and internal financial policies.

Treasury & Compliance

Assist in cash flow forecasting and working capital management related to trading activities.
Liaise with internal and external auditors during quarterly reviews and annual audits.
Ensure timely filing of VAT, GST, or other applicable tax returns related to trading activities.

Team Collaboration

Mentor and review the work of junior accounting staff.
Work cross-functionally with the Merchandising, Logistics, and Operations teams to provide financial guidance.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education:

Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree (BA) in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Professional certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA, CMA) is highly preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 4 years of progressive work experience in accounting and finance.
At least 2 years of experience in a Senior Accountant role.
Preferred: Proven experience within a Merchandising, Trading, or Retail/FMCG environment.

Technical Skills:

Strong proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics).
Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, Power Query).
Solid understanding of inventory accounting and supply chain finance.

Soft Skills:

Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Strong communication skills to present financial data to non-finance stakeholders (Merchandising/Trading teams).
High level of integrity and attention to detail.
Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced trading environment.
