rview: A supermarket cash sales accountant is responsible for managing, tracking, and reconciling all cash inflows from daily sales. This is a critical role for ensuring the accuracy of financial records and safeguarding cash flow in a high-volume retail environment.

Core responsibilities and duties

Daily sales reconciliation: Compare and match daily cash sales reports from the Point of Sale (POS) system with the actual cash receipts collected by the cashiers. This includes reconciling various payment methods like cash, credit card, and other electronic payments.

Cash handling and security: Ensure proper cash handling procedures are followed by cashiers and that cash is securely transferred to the back office for counting and deposit preparation.

Bank deposit preparation: Prepare cash, checks, and other payment receipts for daily bank deposits, ensuring the amounts match the reconciliation records.

Daily reporting: Generate and submit daily sales and cash reports to management, highlighting any discrepancies or variances.

Discrepancy investigation: Investigate and resolve any variances or differences between the sales reports and the bank deposits, such as cash shortages or overages.

Bank reconciliation support: Provide accurate daily cash sales data to the accounts receivable or bank reconciliation accountant to ensure the supermarket's books match the bank statements.

Internal controls: Monitor and enforce internal control procedures related to cash handling and sales transactions to prevent fraud, theft, and errors.

Assist with month-end closing: Ensure all daily cash sales data is accurately recorded and reconciled to support the Daily, monthly & year-end financial closing process.

Reconciliation:

Reconcile sales data with receipts and invoices to ensure accuracy.

Identify and resolve any discrepancies in sales records.

Reporting:

Prepare sales reports and provide regular updates to the Bank Reconciliation Head.

Document any discrepancies and actions taken to resolve them.

Compliance:

Ensure compliance with company policies and financial regulations.

Assist in internal and external audits related to sales transactions.

Monthly KPIs:

Accuracy of sales entries.

Timeliness of sales posting.

Number of discrepancies resolved.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

Minimum of 2 years of experience in sales posting or accounting.

Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
